After a grueling flight home, we are happy to report this years Australian Protection Symposium was another successful event. APS is different than most conferences, in that it encourages dialogue between the presenters and the attendees. There were many passionate discussions that took place, and IEC 61850 was at the forefront of most of these discussions. Tesco was fortunate to have presented our IEC 61850 themed paper, which aimed to bridge the gap between the “utility” and “industrial” domains use of IEC 61850.
There were a broad range of topics covered that touched on all generations of technologies including legacy issues, such as the behavior of numerical relay/settings when its power supply fails; to current day issues that arise when using IEC 61850 based solutions, such as GOOSE isolation and best-practices in terms of testing and commissioning; and finally, next generation advancements such as basic application profiles, remote engineering and network management capabilities, as well as the need for increased functionality of load encroachment logic and the various methods to detect high-impedance faults.
All in all, it was a great event that generated many interesting discussions. If you get an opportunity to attend next year’s symposium, we highly recommend it. Great work to Andrea and Maryam for organizing symposium, and thank you to all the attendees for your insightful contributions.
